But please don’t worry! That look is not the finished curl, and it’s a necessary step for a successful perm.
🔬 Why the Curls Are Intense Before Neutralization: The Science of Perming
A Perm is a scientific process that breaks (Reduction) and then reconnects (Oxidation, or Neutralizing) the bonds (Disulfide Bonds) in your hair.
Softening/Waving: The perming solution is applied to break the hair bonds.
Winding: The hair is rolled onto rods to establish the desired curl pattern.
Neutralizing: The neutralizing solution (oxidizer) is applied to permanently re-set the broken bonds into the shape of the rod.
At the stage before neutralization is complete, the curl retains the exact shape held by the rod, making it appear much stronger and tighter than the actual finished result. The neutralizer works to gently relax this intense set while permanently locking the wave into the hair structure.
